My latest project: crocheting a rag rug from t-shirts for my son’s room. Anyone with kids and pets knows that carpeting takes a heavy toll. Our carpeting wasn’t great when we bought our house and has taken a beating between the boy and the pup. We could have gone and bought a room sized rug, but I wanted something handmade and homemade, from materials we already had in hand. So I raided our boxes of items for our garage sale and grabbed all the T-shirts we had in there and made t-shirt yarn. I have zero experience crocheting, but had a wooden crochet hook that was given to me a while ago. I’m not even entirely certain I’m doing it correctly!
What I underestimated was how many t-shirts an upcycling project like this would use. Thankfully, I found someone on Freecycle who has an entire garbage bag full of t-shirts that is gifting them to me. All in all, this has been a great project so far that has gone very quickly. The finished rug will be heavy duty and wear well also. My husband said this is a rug that our son will be able to pass to his grandchildren!
